How to select a collar based on Face Shape?

In the beginning, the collars of the shirts were used to protect the throat, although now it is a traditional ornament of these garments and depending on their shape it can be used on different occasions.

Before buying a shirt, men rarely stop to think whether its design, its color or its type of collar, this being just as important, is the most suitable for our physiognomy. Unlike women, who tend to look more at how each type of shirt can benefit them, our choice is mainly based on the preference for a pattern, a color and a type of collar.

Although it seems that all the shirts are the same and with a pointed neck, the options are different if you pay attention and depending on the type of place where it will be used and the shape of each person's face and neck, you can make a selection of shirts that favor.

We must bear in mind that by choosing the correct type of collar for our shirt we will be able to hide from a bulging walnut or an elongated face to another visibly wide one.

TYPES OF NECK ACCORDING TO THE SHAPE OF THE FACE AND NECK

WIDE FACES

Men with this type of face should choose shirts with a long, pointed collar. Known as an English collar, a neck with long and narrow lapels, is always a good option to conceal a wide face.

In contrast, the Italian collar, a collar with wide-open lapels, only succeeds in further rounding wide faces. Having a normal but slightly round neck, the French neck, with long points similar to the English, but slightly more separated, is a good ally.

If we have a large head, we must choose shirts with wide and open lapel collars. The larger the head, the greater the degree of opening of the flaps should also be.

NARROW FACES

Men with narrow faces, for their part, would compensate for this characteristic by choosing a neck with short, separate lapels. The aforementioned Italian collar will be a wise choice, considering also that the degree of the narrowness of the face should affect the opening of the tips of his shirt.

For the narrowest faces the necks are known as a full cutaway, necks with very wide beaks, are of great help. In contrast, long-necked necks and closely spaced beaks only accentuate the narrowness of the slimmer faces.

Men with a small head should get small lapel shirts to appear to have a larger head.

LONG FACES

Men with this face should flee from the collars with small lapels and opt for shirts with long pointed collars and wide lapels. Instead, for a flattened face, we will choose shirts with short pointed necks that appear to lengthen this face content.

But not only the appearance of the face should determine our choice, but also the type of neck plays an important role in choosing the perfect shirt.

SHORT NECK

We will look for a shirt collar also small. The shorter it is, the more open the shirt collar lapels should be. The knot in the tie covers the entire space between the shirt's peaks and its ends are covered by the lapels of the jacket.

LONG NECK

Shirts with long pointed collars and wide lapels convey an image of a shorter neck. However, nothing better than a shirt that buttons at the top of the neck to conceal this long neck.

TYPES OF SHIRT COLLAR

The shirts and their great variety of collars -Italian, English, Mao, Rome, etc.- make many options available for all types of physiognomy. In summary, and based on the types of neck, the following points are clear:

If your face is round or your neck is short, it is best to opt for a classic or American neck, because they will exaggerate your features.

On the other hand, if your face and neck are elongated, it is better that you opt for the English or Italian neck that will rebalance your face.

The Italian collar allows you to wear more voluminous tie knots. Chic but at the same time classic, however it is not recommended for short necks or round faces.

The English style collar is easily recognizable thanks to the fact that it has a kind of loop that joins the two ends of the neck leaving a very narrow opening between them. This system allows to highlight the knot of the tie, so it is unthinkable to wear one of these shirts without a tie. It is very elegant, but it requires narrow ties and ties knots. It is a type of neck that tends to lengthen the face.

The classic or French collar is the basic collar par excellence. The opening between your tips is not too exaggerated and the length of the ends of your tips is about 6 centimeters can be worn with or without a tie. Ideal for a casual style. It is the one that best suits the majority.

The club collar is a collar with blunt tips. It is an absolutely dandy neck - it is usually worn with a bow tie and also with a tie - but it may not be the most appropriate for businessmen since not everyone knows how to wear it.
